Genealogy has become a hobby for me over the last 10 years. For me, it's like a puzzle, I love fitting the pieces together. But over the years, I've researched a lot that does not pertain to our family lines. Some for extended family, some for close friends, and some because I was trying to rule out lines to figure out where our line went exactly. I do not want these notes on my Heather's Genealogy Notes blog - because they are not our lines. But I do like to share all of my research, in case it benefits others. That is what this blog is for - research I have done that does not apply to our own family lines, but may be helpful for someone else.

Henry Gable Oberdorf 1829-1913

Henry is not a direct line ancestor for us, but rather the brother of John Christian Oberdorf born 1826. It was through Henry's obit, as well as John's obit, and their military service records, that I finally connected the two as brothers, solving the mystery of who John Christian Oberdorfs  parents are.

Birth Nov 3 1829 in Pennsylvania
Death Dec 3 1913 in Mifflingburg, Pennsylvania

HG Oberdorf was a furniture maker, son Joseph was a very well known buggy maker in the area.

Henry & John Christian Oberdorf served in the same regiment.

Mr. Henry G. Oberdorf died at his home in this place on wednesday Dec 3, at the great age of 84 years and 1 month.

"Mr. Oberdorf was born in this place - a son ofthe late Jacob and catherine gable Oberdor.  he was married to Sarah A. Rady, by whom he had nine children of whom the following survive him: Catherine Jane, wide of Lees Amelung of Pittsburg: Emma S. wife of Geo. W. Notmur of Philagelphia: Misses Mae C., Blanche I and Sara A wife of Rev. J. W. Yeisley all of Mifflinburg.  his wife died about ten years ago.

Mr Oberdorf was a carpenter by trade, which he followed for many years.  Also dealt in buggies and other vehicles, with more or less success, until unable to travel by reason of lengthened years.

During the Civil war, Mr. Oberdorf served faithfully in Co. G. 210th Regt. Pa. Vol. from Aug 27, 1864 until May 30, 1865 when he was honorably discharged by reason of the expiration of the war.  He took part in five severe batttles.  For over thirty years he was a loyal member of Foster Post No. 247 G.A.R. of this place, always present at hte meetings of the post when able, and likewise yearly an interested participant in the observance of Memorial Day in the town and country.  He filled various offices in the Post with the utmost fidelity and his comrades will surely miss him in the great degree.  His brothers John & George, long since deceased, were also in the Union Army.

The funeral service was helf at the late home on Saturday last, conducted by his pastor, Rev. S. Fox of the M.E. Church, who spoke very appropriately of his soldier life in behalf of his country as being very praiseworthy: also paid tribute to his church membershop as being a good citizen.

The casket was adorned with a choice collection of very beautiful flowers - emblems of love and affection for Father.

The pall bearers were Messrs P. B. Miller, Emanual Crouse, Wm. H. Hurch, Jno. t. Hassenplug, S.W. Johnton and Chas. S. Edleman.  Interment in Woodlawn cemetery. Funeral director I. W. Strunk.

Our Oberdorf Line

After YEARS of searching for the father of John Christian Oberdorf, today I finally made the connection!  I suspected awhile back and that Henry Gable Oberdorf and John Christian were brothers, suspecting it because they both served in the same regiment in the civil war.  But today when I was transcribing John Christian Oberdorfs obit, there it was -

John C. Oberdorf OBIT
Note that HG Oberdorf is listed as his brother

John C. Oberdorf 2-3-05
After years of illness from sore rheumatism and other afflictions, much of th etime confined to his bed, Mr John C. Oberdorf passed into rest a the home of his son in law, Mr William Yarger, in Mifflingburg, at about 11' oclock on the last Monday night Jan 30, aged 79 years and 19 days.

Mr Oberdorf was nearly all his life a resident of West Buffalo Twp, A cooper by trade, in which business he was engaged for many years; also did farming, but after thedeath of his wife, which occured in March las, he retired from all work and then made his home with his son-in-law above named, where he received teh best of care from his daughter, Mrs Yarger, aother members of the family.  he was a fine man, a member of the Lutheran Church, and was esteemed and respected by all of his many acquaintances.

During the war of of the union, he served faithfully in Co.  G. of the Regt Pa Vol being a member of Wm. R Foster Post, GAR, of this place.

The following children survive him: Catherine, wife of Mr. Wim Yarger, Mary E., wife of Mr Abr. Huddlestone, James H and Joseph F. of Mifflinburg, John G of Forest Hill, Susannah wife of Benj. Fetter of Cowan and Sarah Gertrude, wife of Franklin Boyer of Pittsburgh.  Also one brother, Mr H. G. Oberdorf of Milton.

The funeral services were held in the Lutheran Church of Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. Luther McConnel, assisted by Rev. C. Cl Mizener.  Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.  The following conrades were pall bearers: S.B. Hoffman, S. J. Rote, Jac. S. boob, Wm. Reichenbach, M.G. Reed, A. H. Stuck.

The only glitch I find is that as far as I can tell, Henry Gable never lived in Milton, only in Mifflinburg.  In 1910 he lived with - C May Oberdorf 43 & Blanch I Oberdorf  36  - two of his daughters.  In 1900 he lived in Mifflinburg with his wife Sarah and his daughter Blanche.  I think it is unlikely he ever moved from his home, his obit seems to confirm that.  HOWEVER, there is NO Henry found in the Milton census in 1900 or 1910 either, so I suspect the obit has a typo, and it should say Mifflingburg instead of Milton.  The copy of the obit I have is taken from the book Civil War Soldiers of Union County..  I'd like to track down a copy of John Christians obit from the actual newspaper.

Note that John is listed as his brother, with a note that they served in the civil war together.
