Mary Ellen Shook Lewis, 83, of Montgomery, went to be with her Lord Sept. 22, 2011. Born in Muncy Valley Hospital, Muncy, Pa., Sept. 25, 1927, she was the daughter of the late William W. Shook and Mary C. (Schmoel) Shook. She was married Aug. 27, 1949, to Lester E. Lewis who preceded her in death Oct. 30, 1982. Mary Ellen graduated from Muncy High School in 1945 and Bucknell University in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science in Pre-Med. She interned at Williamsport Hospital, where she earned an accreditation for Medical Technologist from the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Mary Ellen worked in various labs for 35 years and taught school for 10 years. She enjoyed flower gardening, crocheting, crafts and traveling. She was an active member of the St. John Lutheran "Brick" Church where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and helped with summer Bible School. She is survived by two children and their spouses, Virginia A. and Richard Gruver, and Samuel L. and June Lewis, daughter-in-law, Sally Lewis. She was preceded in death by one son, William C. Lewis. She is also survived by one sister, Doris J. DeWald; seven grandchildren, Marlin and Misty Gruver, Andrea and Justin Welch, Dwayne Gruver, William and Jamie Lewis, Adam and Dana Lewis, Jason Lewis, and Heather and Daniel Truckenmiller; and twelve great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at St. John Lutheran "Brick" Church, 196 Brick Road, Montgomery, with Pastor Martha Sue Moll officiating. Interment will follow in the Muncy Cemetery. Friends will be received on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Spitler Funeral Home, 733 Broad St., Montoursville. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to either St. John Lutheran Church, 196 Brick Road, Montgomery, PA 17752 or to the Montgomery Public Library, 1 S. Main St., Montgomery, PA 17752.
