Genealogy has become a hobby for me over the last 10 years. For me, it's like a puzzle, I love fitting the pieces together. But over the years, I've researched a lot that does not pertain to our family lines. Some for extended family, some for close friends, and some because I was trying to rule out lines to figure out where our line went exactly. I do not want these notes on my Heather's Genealogy Notes blog - because they are not our lines. But I do like to share all of my research, in case it benefits others. That is what this blog is for - research I have done that does not apply to our own family lines, but may be helpful for someone else.

Jacob Snyder 1813-1881

(This is NOT the Jacob Snyder who married Elizabeth Seidel)
This is also not the father of John Moser Snyder who married Mary Ritter

Jacob Snyder
son of
Born March 8, 1813 in Germany

Married
Elgiah Meyers

Time Line:

1813 - Birth of Jacob
1850 census shows a Barbara Snyder b. 1785 living w/him - mother?
born 1812, 1860 census says mother born  in Wurttemburg, Germany, 1850 says in PA

Jacob's daughter Sarah married Daniel Egly - in a bio of Daniel, it says "He married (Jan 16 1867) Sarah E. Snyder, who was a born in Muncy Creek Township 3 July 1847, a daughter of Jacob Elijah Snyder, who after the death of his father in Germany, left his native land for the new world, accompained by his mother, one brother and one sister. Ten children were the issue of this union, one of whom is deceased. " copied by Harold S. Egli, 1959  (I don't know source. Probably records of a family member or a family bible.)

Birth of Elgiah -
Daughter Susan's death certificate shows her mothers name as "Eliza (Elgia?) Meyers"

Per the Lutheran Church Records from Malmsheim, Johann Jacob was born 3/8/1813 and baptized 3/9.  His sponsors (godparents) were Christian Jacob Mundinger(Unknown), George  Jacob Zippolin, and Maria Margareta, wife of Michael Mullinpost (Unknown).  The birth record was also marked that he went to America in 1831.
Per some book I found in the LCGS library but forgot to write the name down, Johann Jakob Schneider was born 3/8/1813 at Malmsheim (Germany), and applied for emigration to North America in July of 1831, #837958.  (Now have printout from ancestry.com of Wuerttemberg Emigration Index, same info). - Article found on Ancestry.com, no author given

1831 - Came to America
Per the naturalization papers filed at the Lycoming County court house, Jacob Snyder was born in 1813 and came to the USA in 1831.  He had settled in PA and was sworn in as a citizen 12/9/1839.  - Article found on Ancestry.com, no author given

Bought Land -
Per various deeds found at the Lycoming County Court House, Jacob (along with Maria Snyder, Conrad Snyder, and Catherine Snyder) bought 43 acres and 10 perches of land in Muncy Creek Twp from Michael Snyder in 1833.  On 9/7/1839, Conrad and Catherine signed over the land to Jacob, and on 8/21/1845, Maria signed over her share to Jacob.
On 7-22-1839, Jacob bought an adjoining 29 acres and 71 9/10 perches of land in Muncy Creek Twp from Michael Snyder.  - Article found on Ancestry.com, no author given

We know Jacob's son Jacob was born in 1841, so Jacob probably married sometime after his arrival in 1831, and before 1840?  Elgiah was also born in Germany - when did she get here?

1840 -
Per 1840 census, Muncy Creek Twp, page 50, Jacob's residence had 5 total people, 2 adult males of the correct age group, 2 adult females of the correct age group, and 1 female 50 -60 (Barbara);  two of these people were in agriculture.  He was living next to Soloman Snyder, William Conrad, and the John Conrad farms. Per 1850 census, Muncy Creek Twp, page 415, living near Solomon Snyder, and Andrew Snyder's sons Philip, David, and Daniel, Jacob Snyder, 38 year old farmer with real estate worth $1200, born in PA.  - Article found on Ancestry.com, no author given

Per deeds recorded at the Lycoming County court house, on 5-2-1857 he sold both tracts of his land to George Washington Dewald of Muncy Creek Township for $750.  He then bought 115 acres of land in Lower Fairfield Twp on 12-14-1857 from Henry Hill and his wife.
Per 1860 census, Fairfield Twp, page 206, 47 year old farmer with real estate worth $2500 and a personal estate worth $900, born in Wurtemberg (with the same children as the 1850 census).

Per record-keeper of the White Church, one of the original trustees and co-signer of the deed (Book 55 page 20) to the church land bought on 3-10-1865 for $50.  It was signed by John Jacob Snyder, Jacob F Drick, and Jacob Hauser, "trustees for the Presbyterian & Lutheran Christian Denominations".  The land contained 1 acre and 85 perches, and was sold by Michael and Catharine Keebler, who are buried at the church.  The church was situated behind land owned by Jacob Snyder, so possibly this is the correct John Jacob Snyder.  There was another John Jacob Snyder who lived in Fairfield Twp and is buried at that church, his wife was Mary.  He lived at the other end of Fairfield Twp, though, so I'm assuming (!) he wasn't a trustee.
On 4-1-1868 he bought 77 acres and 1 perch of woodland from the Simon Dewald estate in "Fairfield formerly Muncy Twp"  for $300 (this probably adjoined his other land).  On 2-25-1869 he bought 33 acres (or 27 acres 10 perches?) in     Muncy Twp from Hugh McNerney (McAnerney) for $800.

Newspaper Articles:
Going by the death dates above, this means this article belongs to *2
       July 14 1855, Sunbury American
This article specifies Henry Conrad son of Henry, so I'm assuming Henry *
4, who is son of *2

For this article we know that the property adjoins George Conrad.  This does not specify estate of, so I am not convinced that this Henry is dead?    It's located in Purdytown, Northumberland County PA.

This appears to be an article about animals at the fair?  It specifies Henry H. Conrad:
Article is published in 1873, eliminating Henry *2 & *5, who both died before that date. *4 has the middle initial B.  That leaves *1 & *3 - or possibly a child that a  6th, unlisted here, Henry.

On December 25 1852 A Henry Conrad is listed as a defendent.
"Raker & Co for Jacob Bloom vs Henry Conrad"
*5 would not have been old enough to be a defendant, but I cannot at this time rule out any of the others.

In 1820 - Two - Most likely *2 & *6

The Mystery of Samuel Sulouff & The 14 yr old girl he disappeared with

This research began with me finding an article about Samuel's brother John going missing in the woods, "disappeared like his brother Samuel".  Both of these boys were the sons of Lucian Hardin Sulouff, my great great grandfather. It appeared, from the article, that Samuel had run off with his 14 year old girlfriend.

When Samuel disappeared with 14 year old Helen, he was 29.     Samuel's wife had sued him for divorce prior to his disappearance, citing dalliances with young girls.

Following the news reports, I don't know that Helen's parents ever found out what happened to her. Update - one of Helen's granddaughters contacted me and told me that there are articles referencing calls Helen made home to her father in later years, so the family did eventually find out where she was.  This grandaughter spoke with the daughter of Samuel & Beatrice, and that daughter said she knew of her fathers history, but to her he was a great father, great farmer, and attended church regularly.

Samuel and Helen had 4 children together, Living under the names Frank E. & Helen Sthoeman.  But before the last daughter was born, he had run off with another young girl - this one age 16.   Samuel was 37 at the time.  He  married her (was he legally married to Helen at the time?  We don't know.) and went to Colorado, where he was arrested and then brought back to Kansas.  Amazingly to me, there is no mention of anyone realizing who he really is, or that him and Helen were missing from PA.

Samuel claims at trial to be married to the new abductee, showing proof, but even if he is not legally married to Helen, there are grounds for a common law marriage to her, so this is still bigamy.  He pleads guilty to the charge of "concubinism".

In the midst of all of this, Helen wins an award at a PTA event.  Life goes on..  but look at the article, the roll call that night was "How I Met My Husband".  I so wish I knew what she answered to that question!

Samuel (AKA Frank) disappears for awhile (he was sentenced to 1-5 years) and then appears in 1941 in Garret Kansas. According to another researcher, Samuel, now using the name Frank Sulouff, married Beatrice in February of 1941.

20 years later, in 1961 I find his new wife, Mrs Frank Sulouff, in her mothers obituary, thus learning that her maiden name was Beatrice Roberts.

Then just 4 years later, Frank kills Beatrice in a car accident.  In 1966 Frank, the defendant, wins a $150,000 lawsuit against him stemming from the accident.

Frank lived to age 82 in 1982, but managed to stay out of the headlines, from what I can tell, the last 20 years of his life.

All of the news articles detailing this story are below, in order.  There are a lot of them.

Then in August - He Takes ANOTHER young girl, while still married to Helen, who is pregnant with his 4th daughter.

In September of 1937, he's being held in Colorado on charges of taking Alice Smith, age 16 - but apparently no one knows that F E Sthoeman is an alias, and that he took his wife Helen when she was 14.

1938 -
4th daughter is born to Helen & Samuel/ "Frank"

In the midst of all of this, Helen wins a prize at a PTA event.
Do not miss the irony.  Roll call was "How I met my husband".

May 2 1938  - Back in Pa, the couple is still in the news as missing.  At the time this article is written, Frank is most likely serving time in jail in Kansas for abducting a second girl.

1941In 1941 I find mention of a "Frank Sulouff" in Garret, Kansas.

1957 - Mrs Frank Sulouff is selling Turkeys

In 1961 I find this obit that gives us insight on who Beatrice Sulouff is.  Beatrice is a year younger than Helen, if the date on her tombstone is correct.

1965 - Beatrice, age 48, dies in car accident, Frank is driving

Beatrice had a sister, Mrs. Melvin Dixon

1982 - Samuel/Frank/FE Sulouff/Sthoeman, dies

From an Ancestry.com Family Tree Comment -
Helen Claire Milheim, married 4 times(questionable if actual ceremony occurred in some of these "marriages". Her first "Marriage" was to Frank C. Stoeman AKA Samuel Suloff, 4 children from this liason; second was to Rubin Base, with 3 children 2 boys and 1 girl were born, then Rubin divorced her in August 1955. When her son David R. Base got married in August of 1971, his mother Helen C. was listed as Mrs. Eugene Phillips. When she died in 1983 her death recorded her name as Helen C. Honeycutt. Her 1st 4 children with Mr Stoeman or more rightly Mr. Suloff resulted in 2 living Stoeman daughters, and 2 deceased daus: Gloria Evelyn Stoeman 1930-1990 and Mildred Marie Stoeman 1932-1984?. Helen is one of the branches on my tree through her grandmother Milheim. I believe above to be accurate, but must admit I feel I need to pursue Mr. Stoeman a bit more. Hope this will be helpfull to you......I do have a pic of Helen as a child of about 4 or 5 yrs. of age.
