Genealogy has become a hobby for me over the last 10 years. For me, it's like a puzzle, I love fitting the pieces together. But over the years, I've researched a lot that does not pertain to our family lines. Some for extended family, some for close friends, and some because I was trying to rule out lines to figure out where our line went exactly. I do not want these notes on my Heather's Genealogy Notes blog - because they are not our lines. But I do like to share all of my research, in case it benefits others. That is what this blog is for - research I have done that does not apply to our own family lines, but may be helpful for someone else.

Samuel A. Barto 1830-1904

Not a direct line ancestor - his sister Sarah Barto married Henry Forney, that would be my direct line.

Samuel A. Barto
Born Dec 25 1830
Died Sept 5 1904
Buried Salladasburg Cemetery, Lycoming County, PA
married in 1852
Henrietta Dieffenbacher
Born Nov. 10, 1826
Died Jan. 5, 1900

Parents of Samuel Barto are Samuel Sr & Elizabeth (Gillman) Barto

Children:
William Barto ( - 1889)

William & Alpheus Abner Barto share one side of the 4 sided Barto Monument in the Salladasburg Cemetery

Note the date below is given as 1830 - but since this Samuel is buried beside his wife Henrietta, along with several of their children, and also beside his father Samuel Sr, who shares a side of the tombstone with Samuel Jr's daughter..  we can be pretty sure this is the same Samuel and the below has a mistake in the year he was born.  Or his tombstone is incorrect.  Either is possible.

SAMUEL A. BARTO JR was born in Union county, Pennsylvania, December 25, 1830, son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Gillman) Barto. His grandfather, John Barto, was one of the pioneers of Union county. His father was a carpenter, which business he followed all his life. He reared seven children: Jonathan, of Illinois; William; Samuel A.; Sarah, wife of Henry Forney; Catharine, deceased wife of David McDaniel; Susan, wife of Samuel Lorman, and Ellen, wife of Frank Kneibler. Samuel, Sr., died in 1884. He was a Democrat in politics, and a Lutheran in religion. The subject of this sketch was reared in Danville, Pennsylvania, and received a public school education. At the age of eighteen he located at Jersey Shore, learned the carpenter's trade, and engaged in that business at Liberty, Tioga county. He remained there seven years, and two years later located on his present farm in Piatt township, where he carried on his trade in connection with farming. Mr. Barto was married in 1852, to Henrietta, daughter of William Dieffenbacher, and has had the following children: William D. and Abner A., both deceased; Frances, wife of Samuel C. Willitts; Elmer, and Sarah E., deceased. Elmer married Mary McLaughlin, and has three children: Weldon F.; William D., and Henrietta. Mr. Barto is a Republican, and has filled several of the local offices of his township, He is a class-leader in the Evangelical church, and is superintendent of the Sunday school in that organization.

Another Samuel, married to another Henrietta, also in Lycoming County??
(the one above is in the correct twp, with the correct children..  but what a coincidence!  The second one might be born in 1830, but the one above has Samuel Sr living with him in the 1880 census, listed as his father.  I am pretty sure the family below is actually BARDO, as found here: http://trees.ancestry.com/owt/person.aspx?pid=21013730)

  1. I have some Bartos in my family tree about 1900 in Nebraska. They're non-blood relatives and sort of out-on-the-end of their branch, so I haven't traced them back to their origins, but maybe one day, I'll find out they are related to your friends' Bartos!
